紐約愛樂管弦樂團創於1842年,在美國「五大」樂團中屬歷史最悠久者,早在2004年,該團即已創下創團以來共舉行一萬四千場音樂會的紀錄。紐約愛樂正式名稱為「紐約愛樂交響音樂協會」,但早在這之前,美國第一個愛樂協會管弦樂團已在1799年成立,而當今鼎鼎大名的維也納愛樂同紐約愛樂於1842年成立,在台灣被奉為天團的柏林愛樂則於1882年才成立,足足晚了紐約愛樂四十年的時間。這樣的創團時間,不僅僅只是數字上的意義而已,因為在紐約愛樂創團的首場音樂會上,演出曲目─貝多芬第五號交響曲,距譜寫完成僅不過三十四年的時間,而距貝多芬過世則只有十五年的時間;此外,當時紐約愛樂請來的樂手多半來自德國和法國,由此可以知道他們都應該間接或直接和貝多芬或其合作的音樂家有過接觸,這就具有音樂傳承上的意義了。而當該團於1846年舉行貝多芬第九號交響曲的美國首演時,更只距此曲首演不到二十二年的時間;在當時因為古典音樂還是屬於社會高層、富人、貴族專屬的音樂,能夠欣賞的人有限,另在美國南北戰爭尚未爆發、西部拓荒、淘金時代還未開始的時期,貝多芬這首在終樂章忽然加入大合唱的作品更被時人認為是很前衛、古怪的作品,紐約愛樂這種引領時代風潮的作法,也成為其不同於歐洲主流樂團的特色,直到今天都引以自豪。
除了音樂上、歷史上的淵源以外,紐約愛樂另一引以自豪的特色就是他所曾聘用的指揮家,其中曾擔任作曲家李斯特擔任威瑪宮廷樂長時期的首席樂手達姆羅許(Leopold Damrosch)就在1876年來到,他死後兒子華爾特也成為指揮家並角逐獲得同一職位,更為紐約愛樂爭取到美國實業家安德魯.卡內基的贊助,籌建了重要的卡內基音樂廳,而在1891年,卡內基音樂廳開幕音樂會上,達姆羅許更邀請俄國作曲家柴可夫斯基前來指揮他的作品,這也是當代少數樂團曾經有過柴氏親臨指揮的顯赫經歷。柴氏的蒞臨同時也見證了紐約愛樂的榮景,七年後的1898年,正在美國訪問教學的捷克作曲家德弗札克也為紐約愛樂寫下他最鼎鼎大名的《新世界》交響曲,並交由紐約愛樂舉行世界首演。因著這樣的壯舉,為往後吸引到更多頂尖歐洲指揮家和作曲家前來合作,包括指揮家孟根堡(Willem Mengelberg)和溫加特納(Felix Weingartner)、作曲家理查.史特勞斯(Richard Strauss)等人。而後,重金邀請前來接任指揮之作曲家馬勒,更於期間譜寫下
當時馬勒在歐洲指揮家身居要職,是維也納宮廷歌劇院的指揮,此職左右歐洲主要音樂界,但因紐約愛樂重金聘請,馬勒在不堪歐洲樂界人事傾輒之際,又希望能夠抽身歌劇這種耗費指揮心力籌演的演出項目來專心作曲,紐約愛樂除許以馬勒重金外,也答應他只要指揮樂團音樂會演出、不需籌演歌劇,讓馬勒欣然前來,更因此讓他得以寫下重要的交響作品(第八、大地之歌、第九),而同時間義大利指揮大師托斯卡尼尼(Arturo Toscanini)也被邀請來共同執掌紐約,可以說一時之間紐約愛樂集結了歐洲最頂尖的兩大指揮於一身。
這份65CD的紀念套裝中,有二十四份錄音是首度以CD的方式呈現,也就是世界首度數位轉錄,其中更有十三份是首度獲得授權許可發行,等於是在CD時代之前也未曾有過的發行。這整套錄音前後包含了超過一個世紀以上的紐約愛樂錄音作品,其中最早的錄音是接任馬勒的指揮家史特朗斯基(Josef Stransky)在1917年指揮錄下的,這之後我們會聽到一連串包括指揮家布魯諾.華爾特(Bruno Walter)、伯恩斯坦(Leonard Bernstein)、布列茲(Pierre Boulez)等紐約愛樂音樂總監之拿手曲目,也欣賞到他們獨門的詮釋風格,跟著這套錄音的回顧,史無前例地見證紐約愛樂百年來的蛻變與演化。
